For value for money for those who take their music seriously you can't beat an MDS-JB980 deck if you can find one. You also need much higher specification microphones to get the results.

OPENMG JUKEBOX SOFTWARE FOR MINIDISC DECK MDS JE780 PROFESSIONAL
Though I have no experience of the format I understand that DAT recorders produce a somewhat better quality of sound and can deal with dynamic extremes better but since they are more in the professional range I believe that tapes and gear are somewhat more expensive than MDs. To me that demonstrates the excellence of MD technology. Using a MD deck and an MZ-R55 we combined the two which made a perfect match and transferred the whole gig to CDs which he then sold off commercially at subsequent venues. After listening to the two versions he thought a mix of the two would be best. A jazz pianist friend of mine often records his gigs onto MD through the amplifier he uses for his keyboard but on one particular jazz festival with a visiting American trombonist he also asked me to record using a microphone to get the feel of live performance brass. The words isignificant, negligable and undetectable spring to mind. The old bugbears of WOW and flutter no longer apply so accurate is the new technology. After editing I was able to transfer it all to CD for him.

I recently asked a conductor/c omposer friend of mine to assess the quality of a performance of a new work of his I recorded for him and he said the quality to him was indistinguishable from BBC "on the road" live performances he had recorded with the old BBC Northern Orchestra so good was the sound and editing options available to me. However I can balance the bass afterwards so it is not too great an issue. I can record both classical music and jazz equally effectively though I must admit that the bass end is usually a bit light, a shortcoming of the microphones I hasten to add. I use an early-ish Walkman model MZ-R55 to gather my material "in the field" with either of two Sony dedicated microphones ECM-MS907 and ECM-MS957 depending on whether I am recording steam trains or music. The minidisc format far out performs the sound quality of ipod and mp3 players even DAB radio and top quality machines such as the MDS-JB 940 and MDS-JB 980 which I use cannot be bettered for versatility in use and for sound recording and reproduction quality. I agree with all that "adam droitwitch" has to say.
